You can tell that Christmas is on its way when the traditional celebrations to turn on the Christmas lights take place. And Bedford’s Festival of Fire and Light is one of the most spectacular around.

For you see, Bedford does it slightly differently to many other towns. When they switch on their lights they put on a show. This Wednesday (21st November) starting at 7pm, there will be a full laser and pyrotechnic extravaganza set to festive music, with the River Great Ouse providing a wonderful backdrop. And what’s more, its completely free.

Of course, your friendly local train service is happy to take you there. The Festival takes place all along The Embankment, which is a short walk from Bedford St Johns station. The below trains are the best ones to get before the show starts:

17:25 arrival into Bedford St Johns (leaves Bletchley at 16:47)

18:09 arrival into Bedford St Johns (leaves Bletchley at 17:31)

The last two trains leave Bedford St Johns at 20:58 and 21:59 respectively. You can download the timetable from the London Midland website.

Its a spectacular night for all the family, and taking the train is a great way of avoiding the hassle of parking. So have fun!
