After a very long and very extensive refurbishment, the Cecil Higgins Art Gallery and Museum will finally be re-opening to the public on 21st June this year. The refurbishment also includes its name, which will be just ‘The Higgins.’
The Higgins will re-emerge as the premier art gallery and museum in Bedford. It will feature new displays, temporary exhibitions and extensive learning and events programmes. A new, single entrance foyer will lead through to redeveloped galleries, large activity spaces, a shop, and a cafe.
Already new displays have been prepared, and many familiar (and less familiar) objects are returning to the building. The Zodiac Settle, designed by William Burges, will be on display for the first time since it was acquired in 2011. The settle (a kind of canopied bench) will be displayed in the new Burges Gallery, a hexagonal room with a dramatic vaulted ceiling, alongside the rest of the spectacular collection of his furniture. Thanks to The Higgins Bedford Blog for the words!
We’ll provide more details on opening times and dates of exhibitions as and when we know them, and as part of our Events bulletins. We will be there at the opening on the 21st of course.
In case you had forgotten, The Higgins is within easy walking distance of Bedford station. We can’t wait for it to re-open!
