Cycling
Carrying on your journey by bicycle offers the flexibility of
a car, but you can get much further than walking. As a result,
using your bike is not just an excellent way of exploring the
Marston Vale, but can also act as a good substitute for short-hop
car journeys.
The Marston Vale Line is well equipped so that you can take
advantage of using your bike. While both Bedford and Bletchley
stations have cycle parking, bikes are accepted on Marston Vale
Line trains at all times, so there is no need to leave your bike at
the station. One carriage of the train usually has ‘tip
up’ seats where bikes can be stored. Bikes can also be put in
the doorways, but doing this inconsiderately can impede people
getting on and off the train. So please consider the needs of other
passengers before doing this.
Cycle Maps
We hope to publish
maps of recommended cycle routes to and from each of our stations
soon. In the meantime, you can get hold of maps of cycle routes to
and from some of our stations by the following means:
Bedford and Bedford St Johns – The Cycle Campaign for
North Bedfordshire has published a cycle map of the Bedford urban
area. To get hold of one, simply send a stamped addressed envelope,
plus a cheque for £1.50 made out to ‘Cycle Campaign for
North Bedfordshire’ to CCNB Publications, 15 Dove Road,
Bedford MK41 7AA.
Woburn Sands, Bow Brickhill, Fenny Stratford, and Bletchley
– A copy of the MK Redway map, which shows cycle routes to
and from these stations, can be downloaded by following the link
below.
Don’t forget, bicycles can also ride on any public highway
or bridleway, so your journey is not just limited to using
designated cycle paths.

Cycle Restrictions
Bicycles can be carried on the Marston Vale Line at any time,
subject to there being space available. Our trains can usually
carry around 3 to 4 bikes per train. If you plan to continue your
trip onwards from either Bedford or Bletchley, there are some
restrictions on when cycles can be taken on trains. We suggest that
you contact the relevant operator prior to travelling.
Cycling Safety
We
are also very keen for you to cycle safely. Before you set off,
remember the following:
-
Cycle confidently. You have as much right to be on the road as anyone else!
-
Know and keep to the Highway Code. Don’t get annoyed when others do not!
-
Ensure that your brakes work well, and your tyres are inflated, and the gears are working properly
-
Always wear a helmet and high visibility jacket
-
Use your front and rear lights when light or visibility is poor
-
Use your arms to signal before turning
-
Cycle a couple of feet away from the edge of the road to avoid drains and potholes
-
Be aware of vehicles around you, and try to anticipate their moves
-
If you ever feel unsafe, or think a situation is dangerous, get off and walk
-
Get in the correct lane at junctions early. Changing lanes is like any other turn!
-
Try and carry the following bits of equipment in a small rucksack. Most are inexpensive, and you never know when you may need them:
-
Small puncture repair kit
-
Tyre pump
-
A sturdy lock
-
Wet weather gear, such as a waterproof coat
-
A small emergency tool kit, with spanners, tyre levers, and Allen keys
