Recent Studies

University of BedfordshireAlthough rather unexpected at first, our small little line has been subject to two different University studies, which has not just helped students to achieve their qualifications, but have also provided useful information to us. We have helped both students out with their work wherever we can.

Below is more information about the two projects which we have been involved in. Their reports are displayed on this website with the permission of their authors. Re-using any information in these reports is subject to you adequately referencing the source of the information (remember, plagiarism is bad!).

Pricing for a Community Railway

University of WestminsterThe first study of the line was undertaken by University of Westminster student James Gleave. This study mainly focussed on pricing, and aimed to work out a potential pricing structure for the Marston Vale Line. As part of this work, James did a survey of users of the line, and looked at records of ticket sales.

We helped James by not just providing support for his work, but also allowing him to undertake surveys on the train, and allow him to access records of ticket sales.

Success of Community Rail Partnerships

University of LondonBarely a year after James' work, University of London student Glen Merryman undertook a study of the success of Community Rail Partnerships, using the St Albans Abbey Line and the Marston Vale Line as case studies. This study asked how successful Community Rail Partnerships are from the passenger's perspective. Once again, Glenn used surveys of current users of the service for his work.

We helped Glen by providing support for this work, and allowing him to undertake surveys on the train.
