Yep, we’ve rebranded again! We’ve decided that Something for the Week really, erm, didn’t quite get the message across. So from now on, these posts will be called the slightly simpler What’s On this Week. Speaking of which.
We start on Tuesday this week (no train service on Monday, remember) at the Bedford end of the line. Just outside Bedford, at Frosts Garden Centre in Willington there are a couple of events on. Running until Friday 12th April is Sweet Treats, where kids can decorate their own gingerbread men. Also, John Laws Circus will be at the centre for the remainder of the week, with acts including the trapeze, hoops, trampolining, and comedy bikes. You can book both of these events online. Over in Milton Keynes, Artworks MK are holding a Kite Building Workshop starting at 11am. Artist Helen will guide you through the processes of designing and constructing your very own kite, and there is an inaugural flight at the end of the session. Starting off on Tuesday, and lasting until Friday, Rugby Camp is taking place at Milton Keynes Rugby Club. Delivered by professional qualified coaches and rugby players, the camp will blend rugby sessions with fun and enjoyable free play sessions. Each day the camp takes place from 9am to 3pm, you need to pre-book, and there is a charge. The camp takes place at the Emerson Valley Sports Pavilion, a bus ride from Bletchley station.
Wednesday sees the Conservation Volunteers host their Spring into Spring event. There are some fun kids craft activities, and they will show you how to use natural materials to create your own wind chimes, baskets, bracelets and much more. Some sessions need to be pre-booked, and there is a charge. The events are taking place at the Great Linford Cricket Pavilion, a bus ride from Wolverton station.
The Parks Trust in Milton Keynes are running a Woodland Play event at Linford Wood, starting at 2pm. Activities will include a zipline, woodland crafts, games, nature trails and more! The Buckinghamshire Family History Society are holding a Family History Talk. For over a hundred years, from 1796 to 1903, the Inland Revenue maintained a series of registers recording the payments of death duties. These registers are now held by The National Archives and represent one of family history’s best kept secrets. There is a no charge, but a small donation is welcomed. The event starts at 7:15pm, and the nearest station is Fenny Stratford, a short walk away. You should just get back in time for the last train.
On Thursday, the Forest Centre have a couple of events going on. Hop to it! is a series of frog-themed children’s sessions taking place all day, starting from 10am. Researching army history is a talk starting at 11am where you can find out how to find out about your family’s military history. For Hop to it! there is a charge, and you need to pre-book. Researching army history is free and all you need to do is turn up on the day. The Forest Centre is a lovely walk from Millbrook station.
Meanwhile, over at Artworks MK there is a Printed T-Shirts Workshop starting at 10am. Draw and design an image which can then be printed onto a blank t-shirt. A simple technique with great results. Also in Milton Keynes the Parks Trust are holding a family bike ride around the lakes at 10am. Its just £3 per family and there is no need to pre-book. You can warm up for the event by cycling to the start point at the Peace Pagoda at Willen Lake from Bow Brickhill station (though it is a fair way). Remember, you can take your bikes on our trains at any time.
Onto Friday, and the Bedford Arts Society are hosting a talk by Julia Sorrell. This will focus on father and daughter relationships in art and as artists. The fun kicks off at 7:30pm, and for guests it is £5 entry. The nearest station is Bedford, a bus ride away, and you should be back by the time of the last train.
Heading to the weekend, and an early birds can spend their time observing some early birds at the Forest Centre from 8am on Saturday, where an Early Migrants Bird Walk is taking place. Get familiar with the likes of blackbird, song thrush, robin, dunnock and a load of others before all those others roll up with their fancy continental songs. This will be a three hour walk taking in a variety of habitats including scrub, woodland, open grassland, wetlands and lake. There is a charge, and you need to pre-book. Over in Milton Keynes, The Parks Trust are holding its Big Easter Eggs-travaganza from 11am to 2am. Join The Parks Trust rangers for Easter family fun with lots of Easter activities from a giant Easter treasure hunt to a special guest appearance from The Parks Trust bunny. Family tickets are £5, and you should book in advance. The event is taking place at Campbell Park, a bus ride from Milton Keynes Central.
Artworks MK keeps up its great range of events with a Book Binding Session. Through the use of a technical and intricate step-by-step creative approach, you will apply basic book-making and bookbinding processes, including sewing, to create a one-off, individual handmade sewn-bound book to take home to be used for any purpose. The session starts at 10am, there is a charge and you need to pre-book. The nearest station to Artworks MK is Wolverton, a bus ride away.
The sporting action kicks off at stadium:MK, where Milton Keynes Dons host Crawley Town. Kick off is at 3pm, and the normal ticket prices apply. stadium:MK is within walking distance of Fenny Stratford station.
